No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
